Dr. Colin Thornton is one of the pioneers of the application of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to theoretical soil mechanics and problems in particle technology. Since 1980, he has developed leading software for the simulation of quasi-static deformation of dense-phase particulate systems, agglomerate impact coalescence, fracture and attrition, hopper flow, die filling, gas-fluidized beds and particle impact studies. His presentation will start by recalling the origins of discrete element modeling of particles systems, illustrated by the work of the few researchers active in this area in the 1980s. Then examples of the application of DEM to wider areas of interest in the 1990s will be shown. This will be followed by a selection of the lecturer’s own work with an emphasis on the ability of DEM to provide new information, discoveries, that can impact upon our everyday thinking. Finally, comments on current and future concerns will be provided.
