Lecture I: The DNA of English & a Revolution in Learning

时间(Time):    2011年12月5日(星期一) 15:00-17:30

地点(Venue):   土木大楼A101

主持人(Chair): 顾祥林 教授

报告简介(Outline):

Why do most Chinese students still struggle with their English 15 or even 20 years after learning the language? What has gone wrong? How can we make it right? It is obvious that the grammatical approach has failed: when you tie students up in a confusing tangle of rules, you leave them paralyzed, killing their interest in the language in the process. Merely correcting errors is not the answer either. What we need is a fun and functional approach to the learning and teaching of English: an approach based on the DNA of English. This is a revolutionary system that will open your eyes to the possibilities of creative writing in a language that is not their mother tongue.

There are four important things you need to know about English as a language. Knowing these four things will liberate your thinking about writing in English. You will also come to realize the special difficulties Chinese students face in learning English as a foreign language, as well as cultural perceptions embedded in English. You will never look at English in the same way again.

Lecture II: Writing Beautiful English—Is there a Magic Formula?

时间(Time):      2011年12月6日(星期二) 9:00-11:30

地点(Venue):     土木大楼A101

主持人(Chair):   黄宏伟 教授

报告简介(Outline):

Chinese students are known for acing the TOEFL tests. But when it comes to writing English in real life, most fall far short. The speaker offers a magic formula for effective writing, developed from years of experience as a speechwriter, ghostwriter, opinion-page writer. It is an eye-opening, functional approach to language learning that will make students fall in love with English as a life-long pursuit. The lecture will examine the basic building blocks of English and the elements of the English modern style. It promotes a new method of “writing by the ear” instead of the traditional “writing by the eye”.
