Abstract
The numerical manifold method (NMM) is one of the most advanced methods for the analysis of discontinuous deformation. It adopts two sets of covers (physical and mathematical) to deal with discontinuities, and treats the continuum bodies, fractured bodies and assemblage of discrete blocks in a unified form, thus it is a natural bridge between the continuum based and discrete element based numerical methods. It has been of significant interests by academics and researchers since it was first proposed in 1991. The advantages of the NMM and its differences from the traditional FEM, XFEM, GFEM and discrete element methods have been reviewed. An enriched NMM in modeling complex cracks has been proposed and it has been further extended to simulate the rock fracturing process. The effectiveness of the extended NMM in accurately simulating the crack initiation and propagation is verified by a series of classical examples. The extended NMM is further applied to model rock slope instability. Recently, a 3-D NMM has been developed and it is demonstrated that the NMM has great potential in rock engineering applications, such as strength and stability analysis of rock caverns, rock tunnels and rock slopes.    
 
Biographical Sketch:  Prof Guowei Ma obtained his BSc from Peking University, MEng from Xi’an Jiaotong University, China, and PhD from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is currently a Professor in the School of Civil and Resource Engineering, The University of Western Australia (UWA). Before he joined UWA in 2009, he has been a tenured Associate Professor in the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He served as the Secretary General of the Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering Geology (Singapore) and the Secretary General of the Association for Computational Methods (Singapore) from 2006 to 2009. Prof Ma’s research interests include rock dynamics, discontinuous deformation analysis, structure response to shock and impact loading, etc. He is currently the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Protective Structures and an Editorial Board Member of another four International Journals. Prof Ma has published two books by the Springer and over 150 international journal and conference papers. He is invited to be a Kwang-Hua Chair Professor in Tongji University in 2010.
