      Dr. Xiaoying Zhuang is now Associate Professor in the Department of Geotechnical Engineering, College of Civil Engineering (ranked No.1 in China), Tongji University. Dr. Zhuang has focused on interdisciplinary research of geomechanics and computational mechanics since 2005. Her PhD was devoted to the cutting edge research of 3D fracture. She was awarded the Zienkiewicz Prize for the best PhD thesis in Computational Mechanics in 2010. She pursued further research as a postdoctoral fellow at Norwegian University of Science and Technology on multiscale fracture modelling of nano-coating, which concluded when she accepted the academic post at TJU. At TJU, she quickly became a key academic sta member and set up her research directions of multiphysics modelling.

5. Research topics

      Dr Zhuang's research interests lie in material failure and design using advanced modelling approaches to reveal and understand the underlying mechanical behaviour including
      1. 3D fracture modelling and discontinuous deformation analysis.
      2. Stochastic model description and generation.
      3. Thermo-hydro-mechanical modelling for energy geo-storage and exploitation.
      4. Multiscale modelling.
      5. Partition of unity methods e.g. meshless methods and the extended nite element method.

      Dr. Zhuang has been developing and applying up-to-date advanced modelling methods to solve for geomechanics problem. Dr. Zhuang developed a very ecient and robust three-dimensional method for fracture. Dr. Zhuang has advanced the state-of-the-art of two-dimensional fracture modelling, adaptive meshless methods and the theoretical basis of meshless methods, partition of unity methods and discontinuum analysis. At TJU, she pioneered into multiphysics and multiscale modelling for . Her research method has been applied in civil engineering and also transferred into a module of commercial software with extensive users. One of the key accomplishments is the development of a very ecient and robust three-dimensional method for fracture (Zhuang X. et al. Fracture modelling using meshless methods and level sets in 3D: framework and modelling. International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering,2012). It is a major breakthrough in modelling three-dimensional discrete fracture, not only in the context of meshless methods but also in other methods such as XFEM. Dr. Zhuang has signicantly advanced the state-of-the-art of two-dimensional fracture modelling, adaptive meshless methods and the theoretical basis of meshless methods, partition of unity methods and discontinuum analysis.
