…… DEM offers the best avenue for research to discover and regularise the physics underlying the behaviour of granular and cellular materials. There are not so many leaders in this field worldwide, and I am pleased to say that Dr. Jiang is the certainly one. If the international geotechnical community is to escape from the “misery of constitutive relations” as once described by Professor Kolymbas.……we will rely on a new generation of research workers who will possess scholarship in applied mechanics, the skill to advance computational techniques, and the judgement to recognize important problems of geotechnical significance. (c) According to the statistics of Web of Science, up to March 14, 2014, the number of citation for two papers in the journal 'Computers and Geotechnics' (Impact Factor 1.224): 'A novel discrete model for granular material incorporating rolling resistance' and 'An efficient technique for generating homogeneous specimens for DEM studies' written by Prof. Jiang Mingjing from the College of Civil Engineering, are ranked first and sixth respectively, since included in the core collection of Web of Science in 1994.
