Welcome Message

International Symposium on Geomechanics and Geotechnics: From Micro to Macro (IS-Shanghai 2010) will be held on 10-12 October, 2010, in Tongji University in Shanghai, China.

As the principal organizer, Tongji University feels very pleased and honored to be offered this chance to host this premier event, and we are all enthusiastic to welcome you as our guests to Shanghai, China.

Shanghai, located at the estuary of Yangtze River, experiences a history of more than 1000 years which hosts many beautiful Chinese Gardens and historic buildings. It is now becoming an eastern metropolitan where you can enjoy both Eastern and Western modern lives. In addition, Shanghai is the frontier of applying advanced Geomechanics and Geotechnics in China. Moreover, 2010 is the right time to view several ongoing and exciting projects related to geotechnical engineering there, e.g. World Expo 2010. We are confident that you will benefit from the symposium and enjoy the city.

We shall arrange several companion programs for the participants, especially international ones, so that they can learn about and enjoy the history and contemporary life of China.

Welcome to Tongji University !

International Symposium on Geomechanics and Geotechnics: From Micro to Macro (IS-Shanghai 2010) will be held on 10-12 October, 2010, in Tongji University in Shanghai, China. It will be held under the auspices of both the TC35 Committee, the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and Chinese Institution of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.

Soils are composed of grains, and their macroscopic response is controlled by their micro-structure, the characteristics of the grains and the disposition of contacts between them. ISSMGE is aware of rapid advances in technology both to investigate the microscopic properties of soils, and to simulate their granular behaviour explicitly through the Discrete Element Method. IS-Shanghai 2010 will provide an opportunity for the exchange of ideas and information on experiments, numerical models and engineering applications related to the discrete nature of geomaterials. In addition, it will invite several well-known researchers to give keynote lectures on these topics.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Shanghai in 2010 !
