The department of geotechnical engineering and the research school of
geotechnical engineering are composed of the institute of tunnel and underground
engineering, the institute of soil and foundation engineering, the institute
of urban engineering geology and environmental geology, the experimental
center for geotechnical engineering and the harbor, waterway and coastal
engineering division. The experimental center is established on the basis
of the former soil mechanics and foundation engineering laboratory, soil
dynamics laboratory, engineering geology laboratory and underground structure
laboratory. This center provides service for the three institutes and
one division of the department and the school as well as other social
sectors who need help.
As a state and provincial key discipline and assisted with the financial
aid from the ministry of education and the provincial government, the
experimental center is further equipped with the biaxial rock creep testing
system, triaxial system for unsaturated soil testing, continuous surface
wave system and creep test cell for soil ú. The biaxial rock creep testing
system can be used to do shear creep test of rock and concrete apart from
the conventional uniaxial and biaxial rock creep and relax .The continuous
surface wave system is the first of its type in China, which is fully
controlled by computer. It can be utilized to test the wave speed and
hardness of soil on the spot of construction and provides fast and undisturbed
soil testing for all layers of soil, which plays a very important part
in forecasting foundation subsidence. These instruments and equipment
have been employed in such state and provincial major projects as Rongyang
Bridge. In addition, we are now engaged in an international cooperation
on an unsaturated soil testing project with France and Belgium.
We have 2 professors, 1 associate professor and more than 10 engineers
and laboratory technicians, among which 3 are PhDs. The center is composed
of the geology and rock and soil mechanics teaching laboratory, geotechnical
simulating laboratory, soil dynamics testing laboratory, rock mechanics
testing laboratory, rock mechanics micro-analysis laboratory, in-situ
testing and monitoring laboratory, harbor engineering laboratory, underground
structure and model laboratory, geotechnical examination and soil laboratory.
The research focuses of the center include rock and soil creep, soil dynamics,
the research on soil(rock)constitutive model, geotechnical model testing
research, on-the-spot geotechnical monitoring techniques and so on.
